As a Realtor in the San Antonio area I can think of an assortment of people who would be interested in this new SPI luxury accomodation.
As an owner of an SPI condo myself I am happy to see such imaginative and visionary structures making SPI home. I can't wait to see it completed and adding yet another quality landmark resort to this beautiful beach paradise.

Developments like this need to be built in the Corpus Christi / Mustang Island area. Much more convenient to get to and better place to live and vacation.

Building this complex on a postage stamp size lot is stupid. Hope it doesn't fall over.

It's a strange looking building, that's for sure. It looks better from the street than the beach. The weirdest thing is parking UNDER one of the swimming pools. Don't want to park there. Looking at the picture from the water view, it looks like they ran out of cement and couldn't finish the south side of the building. I also wonder how the asymetrical design holds up to the first hurricane. Did they do any wind tunnel testing? Hopefully they'll get the foundation for 40 stories right, given the lessons somebody else learned from the leaning tower further up the beach. Even if you love the design, nobody can deny these guys are adding risk to the project by pushing the limits of engineering and overall design. Hopefully everything will turn out OK. Good luck to all the buyers, sellers, and agents!

This all sounds very familiar. Ocean Tower SPI, anyone? Why should ANYONE think this is any better after all the hype and misinformation that was divulged over the OT/SPI debacle. Who wants to have their money tied up for months/years with another RE disaster, SPI style. No thanks!

A year later, this is even a more silly idea. Half of the entire island is for sale. The "Units Available" chart is one year old...I be t the current one looks empty

The Chamber of Commerce has the groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for December 16th, at 5 pm.

http://www.spichamber.com/calendar.php

The last I heard the lenders needed at least 40 pre-sales before they would cough up the $50M needed to get the project moving forward. I don't know what the latest story is, but if the chamber of commerce actually has this event scheduled, maybe the Mexican developer is serious this time.

Of course there have been a number of delays already, and the developer has never given us a straight story for the past delays, so it's anybody's guess as to when this project will be complete. Really, with all the lame excuses this developer has come up with for all the delays so far really makes you question their integrity. I think the truth is that due to the poor economy they didn't sell enough condos to get their lender to pony up the construction money, but that's just conjecture on my part.

Still, it's good to see them moving forward. Perhaps the sight of some actual construction taking place will attract new condo buyers that have been sitting on the sidelines.

The Ocean Towers fiasco has scared away a lot of buyers. No longer is it an iron clad guarantee for buyers to witness a major new high rise under construction. The Sapphire delays also contributed to this atmosphere of skepticism. Even after it's built, and residents move in, there is STILL no guarantee of quality construction. Thank you Isola Bella. "Build it cheap, then get the money and run" seems to be the way some developers do business around here. Or, "Sign on the dotted line, give us you deposit, and then we'll tell you when you can move in".

Another fear is that nobody ever tried to build a building this tall before on South Padre. This thing is even taller than the failed Ocean Towers project, so there is some additional risk here. I'm sure the architect is being especially cautious, but will a building that tall slowly sink into the sand, and contribute to beach erosion? It's not a symetrical design, so will the heavy side sink into the sand faster, and crack the building in half? I doubt it, but these days it's a legitimate concern. Will the offshore wind hitting the tower be forced down to the beach and contribute to more beach erosion, or will the crazy new wind currents actually help build the beach? Nobody really knows, because nobody ever tried anything quite like this before.

On the bright side, the last time I heard they only wanted $10K to reserve a condo, so you can't complain about that.

I wish everybody luck with this project, especially for the realtors that sold these condos a long time ago, and have yet to witness the groundbreaking, much less make it to the closing table. It will be very good for morale to see a major new development under construction. Somebody please take some pictures of the first bulldozer and post them on this web site to prove to the whole whole world that this project is for REAL. (Not just the ribbon cutting ceremony, but some REAL construction underway.)
