Town of South Padre Island Receives Recognition from National Weather Service

Representatives from the National Weather Service have proclaimed the Town of South Padre Island a Storm Ready community.

A formal presentation acknowledging the Town’s success as a Storm Ready community was held during a Board of Aldermen meeting Nov. 1. The presentation featured speakers from the National Weather Service and the Town of South Padre Island.

The National Weather Service presented the Town with two large signs acknowledging their success. The Town, along with the City of Weslaco, are the only two communities in South Texas that are recognized as Storm Ready.

The National Weather Service designed StormReady to help communities better prepare for and mitigate effects of extreme weather-related events. It helps establish a commitment to creating an infrastructure and systems that will save lives and protect property.

Receiving Storm Ready recognition does not mean that a community is storm proof, but Storm Ready communities will be better prepared when severe weather strikes. Storm Ready is a volunteer program that focuses on communication, mitigation, and community preparedness to save lives.

The Insurance Services Organization (ISO) may provide Community Ratings System (CRS) points to Storm Ready communities, which may be applied toward lowering flood insurance rates with the National Flood Insurance Program. The community in a Storm Ready status has an updated infrastructure in emergency preparedness. The National Weather Service requires communities to volunteer in this program because it will save lives and property and recognizes those communities that are better prepared for weather emergencies.
