South Padre Island Welcomes Dallas Visitors and Second Home Owners

American Eagle Airlines, the regional affiliate of American Airlines, will begin nonstop jet service between the Brownsville (South Padre Island International Airport) and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport June 11 2009.

American Eagle will operate the three daily flights using:
  • 50-seat Embraer ERJ-145 jets and
  • 44-seat Embraer ERJ-140 jets.
"Brownsville is both important and popular as a business and leisure market," said American Eagle President and CEO Peter Bowler.

"The airport is located just minutes from Matamoros, Mexico, as well as beautiful South Padre Island. We are pleased to be serving this key Texas and Mexico market, allowing customers to connect through DFW to numerous other destinations throughout AA's network, including Chicago, Atlanta and Detroit."

"We welcome American Eagle service to the historic Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport and encourage everyone to 'Fly Brownsville,' " said Larry Brown, Director of Aviation for Brownsville International Airport and Alice Donahue of Alice Donahue Real Estate South Padre Island.

Welcome to South Padre Island, our friends from Dallas! If I remember correctly there is a bus that runs from the Brownsville airport to Port Isabel, and from there you can catch "The Wave" island bus.

I am astounded that with all the current economic problems, and airlines cutting back service, they are actually ADDING air service to our area. That says a lot about our ability to weather the current economic problems. I LOVE it!

This is a positive for the island. Three flights per day from the Dallas area is great for business and great for the vacationer as well. One of the biggest complaints I hear form people is that it is hard to get to SPI for the average person. The easier it is to get here the more likely people will consider SPI for a second home or retirement place over other more costly locations around the nation. I feel the investment the Town of SPI has been making in public improvements such as streets, landscaping and lighting as well as the numerous walk paths to the beach make SPI a good place that gets better every year, far from a location in decline, we are in our growth phase right now and prices are positioned at the low end for beach front resort property.
Though hurricane Dolly caused much damage back in July 08' now the island has numerous renovated and actually better properties available for sale than pre hurricane Dolly or so it seems.
From a business standpoint the 3 flights a day will serve well to facilitate trade and alliances from our area to Texas to the Dallas Metroplex, a win-win if you ask me.
