South Padre 2nd Bridge Update and More Good News

Progress is underway on South Padre Island in many ways!
The third public meeting for the South Padre Island second bridge was held on February 26, 2009. After starting out with 21 potential routes for a second causeway connecting the mainland to South Padre Island, the Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority presented the final five selections.
On the mainland side, three of the remaining alternates tie into Centerline Road alongside the Cameron County Airport. The other two terminate a little further south at Holly Beach.
On the Island, three locations were selected for that end of the bridge. The northernmost is in the vicinity of Beach Access No.6. Two are shown ending in the area of Beach Access No.5 and Atwood County Park. The other two terminate in the vicinity of The Shores development just north of Andy Bowie Park.
Most of the comments during the meeting favored route No.2, which starts at Centerline Road on the mainland and ends north of the town of South Padre Island near Atwood County Park.

South Padre Island YTD sales for 2009 exceed 2008
South Padre's real estate market is showing surprising strength and is the only coastal market in Texas and one of the few markets in the country showing a sales increase in 2009 over 2008.
Let's hope this shows we are on our way to full recovery from two storms: Hurricane Dolly and the national recession in 2007-2008. We attribute South Padre's progress from strong sales coming in from Mexico - and from the universal appeal of our tropical climate, blue waters, white sands and affordable high-rise condos overlooking the beach. (The only beach in Texas where cars are not permitted)
A Gambling Bill in legislation would create up to 12 casinos, authorize slot machines at racetracks and allow the state’s three Indian tribes to conduct gaming enterprises. Bill numbers: House Bill 1724, the legislation, and House Joint Resolution 70, the constitutional amendment; Senate Bill 1084 and Senate Joint Resolution 131.
Proponents say the bill would generate needed tax revenue and create thousands of jobs at a time of economic uncertainty. Galveston and South Padre Island would be the likely recipients of two casinos on the Gulf Coast
Sponsors: Sens. Rodney Ellis, D-Houston, and John Carona, R-Dallas, and Reps. Jim Pitts, R-Waxahachie, and Jose Menendez, D-San Antonio.

Having watched the bridge discussions and not having a vested interest in where the bridge is built, the following observation is offered. It appears that concurrent with the planning and construction of the the new access, a casino could possibly be built on the South end of South Padre island. With this added attraction, the current causeway will continue to be congested and overloaded at times. We may find ourselves in need of upgrading or adding to the existing causeway even though we have built a new one to the North. Of course if a casino is approved, location further North may make sense. |

Routing any traffic around Port Isabel would be very bad for the Port Isabel economy, and right now we need all the business we can get! I do however appreciate the potential benefits of having a "back-up" bridge, especially in light of the bridge disaster we had a few years ago. An extra bridge would also come in handy when everybody waits until the last minute to evacuate the island when hurricane evacuations are ordered (as always seems to happen). Eventually the island population will also grow, justifying a new bridge, but in the current economy you can't use that excuse to build a new bridge. Perhaps the optimal time to build a new bridge is when the island population increases to the point that a typical hurricane evacuation becomes impossible. In the mean time you can start to plan for it, acquire the necessary property to support it, etc. Nothing wrong with some good long term planning. Another thing the local government could do is pass a law which restricts further building at some pre-determined point, at which emergency evacuation becomes impractical with one bridge. For example, let's say the authorities determine that if island development grew more than 10%, evacuation would become impractical, so you have to stop all development at that point until a new bridge is built. Just food for thought. |

The drug wars pouring into Texas are going to get much, much, worse. The United States Military is already preparing to get involved. No casino will ever be built so close to a war zone. Sadly, this cause of events will have negative impact in all of south texas and northern Mexico. |

House Joint Resolution 107, written by Rep. Carol Alvarado, D-Houston, proposes a constitutional amendment “authorizing the legislature to authorize and provide for regulating the conduct of gaming” in the state. It also would require the governor to call a special session to consider gambling legislation should Texas voters pass the amendment.
Eiland, who is the speaker pro tem of the state house, said he lent his name to the resolution to help Alvarado, a freshman lawmaker, ship it through the process.
Some polls have shown Texans favorable to legalized gambling even if many in the Republican-controlled Texas legislature don’t, Eiland said. |

Cameron County Officials say they've picked 5 possible routes to South Padre Island via bridge.
All the proposed routes would start at Holly Beach near Bayview, and end near Beach Access 5 or 6 on the island.
An environmental impact study on the areas that will be impacted will take up to 34 months to complete. Once that is done, the county will take futher action |
