County given $21.6 million for transportation projects
BY EMMA PEREZ-TREVIÑO The Brownsville Herald
The Texas Transportation Commission on Thursday approved $21.6 million for the Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority for the West Loop project and a second causeway linking the mainland to South Padre Island.
The West Loop project, a component of the county and city’s West Rail Relocation Plan, will get $12.4 million, and the remaining $9.2 million will be applied toward the causeway, county Transportation Director Pete Sepulveda announced after the commission’s monthly meeting in Austin.
Regional mobility Chairman David E. Allex was not immediately available for comment, but Sepulveda’s statement noted that Al-lex extended his appreciation to the commission for its support, while County Judge Gilberto Hinojosa said the Commissioners Court continues to support the authority’s vision and planning.
The authority is charged with developing transportation projects, such as toll roads, airports and freight rail through revenue bonds
The money from the state will be used to conduct environmental, revenue and traffic studies, design and engineering services, legal and financial consulting services, marketing and public outreach.
The West Loop project follows the present Union Pacific Railroad’s right-of way from U.S. Highway 77/83 at Olmito, south to Palm Boulevard to the Amigoland Mall area.
Sepulveda pointed out that the project would provide an important north-south corridor and a route for noncommercial traffic, improving access to the city’s business district.
A second causeway would provide an alternate route from the Island to the mainland, facilitating evacuation in the event of a hurricane, the statement notes |

This is a very good indication that a second causeway is in the works. I look forward to the results of their studies. |

They would not fund this kind of study unless the decision has already been made to build a second causeway. |
